Reliable, unbreakable, affordable. The Nissan Patrol is a name synonymous with ruggedness, a legendary off-roader capable of going anywhere, anytime. Meticulously honed for over five decades, the Patrol is Nissan`s flagship large SUV model and enjoys a rich heritage particularly in the Middle East that dates back to the 1950`s.
Under the banner of "The Hero Comes Home" the Patrol is back as an all-new seventh generation model, building on its impressive history.`
Nissan patrol 4W60 model
The first Patrol came off the production line in September of 1951, the model being the 4W60. These early Patrols were mainly used by police, fire and military in Japan. The overall styling was similar to the Willys Jeep. The 4W60 used the 75 hp 3.7L Nissan NAK engine from the Nissan 290 bus, but with part-time four-wheel drive and a four-speed manual transmission.
The 4W60 was replaced with the 4W61 in August 1955. The 4W61 was similar to the 4W60 with the exception of the grille (with some chrome bars), a one-piece windshield that sits further back when folded, chrome strips on the hood, and unequal sized seats (passenger's side is wider than the driver's). The other big change is the engine. The 4W61 was powered by the new 3.7 L Nissan NB engine, producing 92 hp, and later was powered by the 105 hp 4.0L Nissan NC engine. The grille badge was chrome and red and said "NISSAN". In October 1958, the 4W61 was discontinued and replaced with the 4W65.
In October 1958 the 4W65 Patrol was introduced. The 4W65 was similar to the 4W61 except for the grille, which now had all chrome bars and redesigned front fenders and hood. A "NISSAN" badge was on the grille, and "Patrol" badges were added on the sides of the hood. An 8-seater hardtop wagon, the WG4W65, was available. The short-lived 4W66 Patrol was introduced in December 1959. The only change is that the 4W66 was powered by the 125 hp 4.0L P40 engine. The 4W66 was discontinued in June 1960.
Nissan patrol 60 series model
The 60-series from October 1960 was the second generation Patrol. Its job was to propel Nissan’s global 4WD assault. Not much changed in the 60-series’ 20-year lifespan. The 60 Series remained unchanged until 1980. A SUV which has produced as one style for many years is Mercedes Benz G class which produced from 1979 for 32 years. The G-Class is still produced and is expected to continue in production. The second is Toyota Land Cruiser 40 which is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Corporation. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon, and utility truck versions. The third is Nissan patrol 60; all 60 series patrols have interchangeable parts. The second-generation 60 Series had begun making a name for itself in the Australian outback, especially after it became the first vehicle to cross the daunting Simpson Desert. By that time, it was truly became legend.
The 60 series Nissan Patrol went into production in October 1960. In June 1980, just short of two decades later, the last 60 series rolled off the production line.
The 60 series Patrol was a completely new design, and the first time the Patrol had its own distinctive look. Previous Patrols had all been directly inspired by American Jeeps. The 60 series featured front guards that were incorporated into the body, rather than appearing like something that had been added later. The new broad and narrow front end design gives the 60 a very bold and purposeful look.
The engine used in the 60 series was the same P series 3956cc OHV 6 cylinder engine used the previous 4W66 Patrol. Initially this engine produced 125hp.
The previous Patrols all had their electrical placed fairly low in the vehicle, and as a result they were never particularly good at fording creeks and streams. All this was fixed on the 60 series, and the brochures all drew attention the fact that they were more waterproof.
Initially the only model available was the standard 60 model, which was the short wheelbase soft top version with the fold down windscreen.
Nissan Patrol 160 model:
The 160 series was introduced in 1980 to replace the 60 series. In 1980, the engines available were the L28, P40 and SD33. All models were available with a four-speed manual transmission, albeit a three-speed automatic was optional on long wheelbase vehicles fitted with the L28 engine. All 160 series Patrols came with a two-speed offset transfer case, which featured a 1:1 high gear and a low gear.
Nissan patrol Y60 model
A turning point for Nissan’s long-standing Patrol, first introduced in 1951, came with the fourth generation Y60 Patrol, which was—and remains—among the world’s great off-roaders. Large and spacious, the Y60 added comfort and discrete luxury to the utilitarian and militaristic Patrol. It came in three standard body types, including station wagons in 8-a five-door, long-wheelbase or three-door, short-wheelbase version as well as a pick-up. Engine options were all smooth and ruggedly built in-line, six-cylinder designs including turbo-diesels (135 HP and 212 lb/ft 2.8-liter or 145 Hp and 244 lb/ft) and naturally aspirated gasoline engines (155 HP and 182 lb/ft 3-liter, 175 HP and 236 lb/ft 4.2-liter, or 200 HP and 257 lb/ft 4.5-liter).
The Patrol Y60 was capable off-road with its boxy design, high ground clearance, low mass by modern standards, and large off-road tires. The Y60 Patrol was a favorite of international aid agencies as well, and for conversion as an expedition vehicle thanks to its comfort, simplicity, and most importantly its over-engineered indestructibility.
The Y60 was also the first Patrol with all-independent coil spring suspension, which not only greatly improved on-road ride and handling but ensured wheels stayed in contact with the ground through, ruts, rises, and ditches.
The underbody hardware (differential, CVs etc.) was significantly strengthened. Comfort levels were also increased over GQ, especially in the seating and NVH areas.
In 2004 a significant facelift model was released, with new headlights, box flares on each guard, and larger tail lights. That same year, Nissan stopped selling the Safari in Japan due to poor sales. Nissan also makes a two-door pickup version of the Y61 series available as cab chassis and with a style side tray in some markets. Although a new model has been launched, this Y61 series will still sell for off road enthusiasts but only with few options as a basic trim.
The fifth generation Patrol is still in production alongside the new Sixth Generation Patrol in many markets around the world, such as Australia and Europe, which have not yet received the new sixth generation model.
Nissan Patrol Y62
The all-new 2010 Nissan Patrol was launched on 13 February with the slogan 'Hero of All Terrain', at a VIP event in Abu Dhabi, UAE. It is the base for the new Infiniti QX56
The new Patrol is now the most powerful vehicle in its class. And the key technology achieving this jump in performance over the predecessor`s 4.8 liter power plant is the newly developed `VK56VD` 5.6-litre V8 engine with VVEL (variable valve event and lift) and DIG (direct injection gasoline) technologies that generate 400hp and 560Nm of torque on the top specification version of this new engine.
A variable 4x4 mode package allows switching between four drive modes: sand, on-road, rock and snow, with the flick of a switch. And a "Hydraulic Body Motion Control System" system is available. Also available are an electronic-locking rear differential, hill start and hill descent control, as well as lane-departure warning, automatic braking and stability control.
Every component has been redesigned for maximum performance and smooth response, while a new 7-speed automatic transmission with a wider range of gear ratios than its predecessor, gives the off-roader the ability to deliver power faster.
In the year 2009, Nissan sold around 25,000 of the Y62 vehicles in the Middle East countries and Mongolia which demand luxury and high-powered petrol engines.
In the year 2010, Monnis Motors LLC presented the new Nissan Patrol 2011 in Mongolia. Today New Nissan Patrol is already tested in Mongolian condition and shows its off-road character allows driving everywhere.
